Graduate Degrees in Education

The program provides a special focus on how people in their everyday lives use written language and other semiotic systems to learn, communicate, create identity and participate in all aspects of society. Students acquire a deep understanding of diverse perspectives in literacy education.

The master’s program in Biomedical Education is a thesis-only specialization combining the practice of clinical medicine with formal training in educational theory and practice. It is a partnership between the colleges of Education and Human Ecology and Medicine.  

The top-rated Counselor Education Master's program readies students to work in community-based and private settings, in hospitals, or as professional school counselors. The goal being to train ethical, self-reflective practitioners through theory and practice.

This program has been designed to train future counseling psychologists, following the competencies of American Psychological Association’s Council on Accreditation. Students will be trained to use a health equity lens, to develop excellent advocacy skills, to understand the impact of change through policy making and to develop outstanding leadership skills.

The Dramatic and Arts-based Research Teaching and Learning is a flexible and customizable program that allows students to develop expertise in dramatic and arts-based pedagogies that changes the ways young people and educators understand themselves and others in society.

In the nationally ranked Educational Psychology program, students will engage in research across a range of topics and learn how to apply findings to improve performance in education. The faculty teaches the cognitive and affective mechanisms of learning, development, motivation and instruction in schools.

The Inclusive STEAM (InSTEAM) Education specialization explores inclusion of all students, including those from urban, rural and suburban communities along with those with visual and sensory impairments in science, technology, engineering, the visual arts and mathematics education.

Innovative Arts, Literacies, and Languaging engages the arts such as dramatic inquiry, performing arts and storytelling, for creating and cultivating transformative communities through which people author their learning and lives.

This specialization allows for integration and customizing of the program with coursework from throughout the department and college. Students will develop a more humanizing, holistic, project-based approach that is meant to apply to any educational setting.   

Study how language, culture and social processes affect educational issues. Students will have many ways to customize their program, opportunities to work closely with faculty and pursue their own research interests to shape the educational discourse in language, culture and learning in our nation’s schools and beyond.

Learning Technologies is an interdisciplinary program focused on the intersections of learning and technology in formal and informal educational settings and in society at-large. The program prepares students to design, implement, study and evaluate learning technologies for a diverse range of educational contexts.

The Literacies, Literature, and Learning (LLL) specialization encompasses fields such as Reading and Writing Development, Children’s and Young Adult Literature, and English Education across early childhood, elementary, middle, and secondary contexts.

Graduate students in Ohio State’s Literature for Children and Young Adults specialization pursue deep study of the history, evolution and current trends in children’s and young adult literature from nationally and internationally recognized scholars. 

Students in the Multicultural and Equity Studies in Education program will be immersed in a research-intensive environment, learning and engaging in the critical study of multiculturalism, diversity and identity to create more equity in education and research.

Multilingual Language Education encompasses Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), World Languages and Bilingual Education.

The program in Philosophy and History of Education prepares students to interpret, criticize, and construct educational ideas and arguments. This preparation includes examining the history of educational thought, institutions, and policies in their cultural and philosophical contexts. 

A degree in Quantitative Research, Evaluation and Measurement allows students to approach their career with an in-depth understanding of quantitative methods. The expertise gained to create, identify and evaluate tests, surveys and curriculum programs, will contribute significantly in an educational setting.

A leader in literacy research and teaching, the Reading and Literacy in Early and Middle Childhood specialization provides strong theoretical and practical understanding of teaching, learning and educational environments. The faculty will cultivate understanding of reading and literacy development as well as mentor and encourage student research interests.

Rethinking Early Childhood and Elementary Education addresses classic and contemporary research regarding young children from infants/toddlers to 5th grade. This includes children from all cultural, racial, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds as well as the varied abilities within the context of families, schools and communities.

Ohio State’s School Psychology program trains scientist-practitioner school psychologists to deliver services across many different settings with an emphasis on children in urban settings. The program has a foundation in sociocultural theories of psychological and educational practices focusing on social cognition, social behavioral principles and how social contexts impact students' lives.

Ohio State’s STEM Education program offers an individually tailored program that meets specific student research and leadership goals. Students from around the world come to Ohio State to learn from leaders in the field and for the numerous educational and research opportunities.

The Sensory Impairments and Inclusion master’s degree provides advanced coursework on current theories, research and practices for increasing access to curriculum for all students, including those with sensory impairments. The degree can be completed in combination with, or separate from, the teaching visual impairment licensure for the state of Ohio.

The Special Education program students will learn how to improve the lives of those with disabilities while earning accredited teaching credentials in special education. There are several tracks within the program and specialties in students with mild to moderate, moderate to intensive, early childhood or applied behavior analysis.

Consistently ranked among the top premiere programs in the country, The Master of Education (MEd) is a teacher education program designed for students to gain the knowledge and skills needed to earn an initial four-year Ohio license while completing graduate studies and research in their chosen field of study.

The Workforce Development and Education program prepares educators for their future in schools, the workplace and organizations. Students are prepared to become successful professionals in adult learning and human resource development, business education, career and technical education, and family and consumer sciences education.
