50-Hour Field Experience Requirement

The final course taken in the program—EDUTL 5189.66 Advanced Field Experience in TESOL— involves extensive, 30 hours of observation and direct instruction to English learners in a K-12 school setting. Candidates are supervised by a licensed or endorsed TESOL educator but must receive prior approval from the district where the placement will occur before working with a TESOL supervisor. Candidates who are ready to complete this final course in Spring Semester should contact the TESOL program manager during Autumn Semester (deadline is October 1) in order to complete the placement application in a timely manner.

Per Ohio requirements, candidates who began their TESOL Endorsement program during or after Autumn 2017 must complete a total of 50 hours of fieldwork in order to earn their endorsement. Since 30 hours are accrued during EDUTL 5189.66, candidates can complete the remaining 20 hours throughout their time in the program by supervised instruction/support of English learners. For more details, please see the “Endorsement Field Requirement Form” on the TESOL Endorsement homepage.
