Biography

Karen E. Irving is an associate professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University. She earned her BS and MS in chemistry at Bucknell University and PhD in science education at the University of Virginia. Dr. Irving received the 2004 National Technology Leadership Initiative Science Fellowship Award for her work in educational technology in science teaching and learning.

Dr. Irving was co-principal investigator on the Connected Classrooms in Promoting Achievement in Mathematics and Science project supported by the Institute of Education. This project was an interdisciplinary effort focused on teaching and learning of mathematics and science at the 7th-10th grade using wireless handheld devices in a classroom setting. Currently, Dr. Irving serves as associate director for education on the The STEM-faculty project: Training the next generation of STEM faculty at higher education institutions in India.

Her research interests include technology-assisted formative assessment in STEM classrooms and the use of science focused animations and simulations to promote strong conceptual understanding.

Recently, Dr. Irving was appointed to serve on the Ohio Science Standards Review Committee by Ohio Senate President Keith Faber.
